Reasons to Be a Fan of Participation Trophies

participation trophies

We had a devastating flood and lost most everything. I pulled my kids’ trophies and medals out of their rooms with the idea of ordering them replacements. My husband didn’t want me to. He said to only order and replace the ones that “meant something,” not the participation trophies. I strongly disagreed. Not a fan of participation trophies? There are so many reasons to like them or at least to think about them differently. I liken it to an adult training for and running in a marathon.¬†Are you not proud of your hard work and training? Don’t you want to … Read more

Is There a Prize for Being the Busiest Person You Know?

being busy all the time

Busy, busy, busy. We love to be busy. One might think there is a prize for being the busiest in the land. Even more than that, we love to tell others how busy we are. homemade valentines

What are your thoughts on homemade Valentines? Do your kids make them? And do they want to, or is it more a this-will-be-a-fun-thing-to-do-together mom idea? I guess I love the idea in an abstract way, but not in a realistic way. My kids would enjoy doing 3 – 4 of them and then would be done. Isn’t it enough to get them to sit down and write out all … Read more

someone competing with you

This might sound weird, but have you ever had the feeling that someone is competing with you? Or that someone — aka a fellow mom — is overly interested in what you, your kids, or family are doing? Moms competing is a real thing. There’s even a name: Competitive Mom Syndrome. Perhaps this is the person who rarely, if ever, will Like or Comment on your Facebook posts. Competitive Mom Syndrome This is the person who will rarely pay you or your kids a compliment. She might just “forget” to RSVP to your child’s party. Strangely, you may even feel … Read more

Empty Nest: How Old Will You Be When You Have One?

empty nest

An older mom friend made an off-handed comment on our kids’ first day back to school. She said how she wasn’t feeling more confident as she got older. She said this notion of being more confident as we age must have applied to our moms’ generation. They had their children younger. When my mother was 44 years old, I graduated college. Yet, when I was 44, my child was a preschooler. If my youngest moves out when she’s 23, I’ll have an empty nest when I’m 63. Thinking back, I felt much more confident in my teens and twenties, even … Read more
